BANEBERRY
(Actaea spicata)

Description:
Perennial, with erect, slightly branched stems 1-3 ft. Footstalks
of the leaves arise from root, divide into 3 smaller footstalks.
Each leaf is composed of 18-27 leaflets. Flower stem also comes
from roots, White flowers grow in spikes. Bitter, glossy red or
white berries, with several seeds, are oval, attached to the stem
by short thick "off center" stalks. Whole plant is dark
green without hair. U.S. in moist woods.
POISONOUS:
All parts, especially the roots, berries and sap. Symptoms: vomiting,
diarrhea, headache, dizziness, shock, increased pulse, delirium,
visual as few as 6 berries can cause severe poisoning. Death can
occur.
