HENBANE
(Hyoscyamus niger)
black henbane, hog's-bean
Description:
Flowering stem pushes up from root crown to 4 ft., becoming branched
with alternate, oblong, unequally lobed, stalkless leaves. They
are pale green, conspicuous mid-rib with soft, glandular hairs,
clammy, sticky to the touch. Flowers, shortly stalked, lower ones
grow in fork of branches, upper ones crowded together in one sided,
leafy spikes. U.S. in waste and sandy places, by roadsides, old
buildings.
TOXIC,
Medicinal: All parts are toxic, especially the leaves. Convulsions,
delirium, giddiness, sleepiness, blurred vision, and hallucinations.
Used medicinally for external uses; lotions earaches and rheumatism
. Use with professional advise.
