Description:
Large stiff, spiny annual, 1-5 ft. tall. Large ill-smelling leaves
are coarsely toothed, ovate. Erect, white or violet trumpet-shaped
flowers, 4 in. long. Seeds coming from axils of leaves are oval
shaped, prickly. North and South America and other parts of world
on dry soils, wastelands, along roadsides.
Medicinal,
Toxic: Tincture of leaves, for spasmodic chronic laryngitis
and asthma, aphrodisiac. All parts, especially seeds, leaves are
toxic. Abnormal thirst, distorted sight, delirium, incoherence
and coma. Dangerous in inexperienced hands. Do not use without
medical supervision, overdose can be fatal. Drug stramonium made
from leaves and seeds for narcotic, sedative effect.
