LARKSPUR
(Delphinium consolida)
delphinium, field larkspur, lark's claw
Description:
Annual, upright, round stems, 12 in. or more, hairy and divided
into alternate, dividing branches. Leaves, alternate, lower ones
with petioles, upper ones sessile. Flowers, in short racemes,
pink, purple or blue, in a terminal raceme, each flower with a
spur projecting from the upper backside. Fruit, many seeded follicle.
Common in western states, cultivated in gardens.
Medicinal,
Toxic: Tincture of seed, a parasiticide, insecticide, destroys
lice in hair. An irritant poison. Seeds and young plants, most
toxic, all parts should be considered dangerous. Children to be
warned against putting any part of this plant, or any of the other
species, into their mouths. Contact may cause dermatitis. Fatal
if consumed in large amounts.
