Description: Perennial, dark brown, scaly rhizome, producing a tuft of fronds, curled spirally when new, open and mature to 9-24 in. tall. Leaflets, divided into serrated-edged segments. Throughout the world in woods, ravines, and rocky slopes.

Edible, Medicinal, Poisonous: Fronds, boiled for a vegetable. Rhizome, used to expel tapeworms, other parasites. CAUTION: Leaving a male fern medication in the body too long can cause poisoning. A purgative must be used to remove both worms and male fern after 2 hrs. of ingesting. No alcohol to be taken while male fern is being used. Improper dosages taken internally can lead to blindness and death. Use with professional medical assistance.
