LAUREL
(Kalmia latifolia)
calico bush, spoon wood
Description:
Evergreen shrub, 4-20 ft. tall. Stems, crooked, bark rough. Alternate
or whorled, 3 in. leaves are glossy, oval, no marginal teeth,
dark green on top, yellowish underneath. Large terminal clusters
of rose to white flowers borne on sticky, hairy stems. Fruit capsule
is many-seeded. Eastern North America on rocky slopes and woodlands.
POISONOUS:
All parts, especially the foliage. Repeated swallowing, watering
of the eyes, nose and mouth, heartbeat is slower, breathing becomes
difficult, depression, prostration, convulsions, paralysis of
the arms and legs, coma and possible death within 12-14 hours.
