POISON
WATER HEMLOCK
(Cicuta virosa)
water parsnip, fool's parsley
Description:
Perennial, stout, erect, hollow stemmed, branching, 2-6 ft. tall,
from a thick root-stock. Lower leaves, large, long-stalked. Upper
leaves divided into 3 leaflets, each again into 3. Small, white
flowers spread to a flat-topped cluster. Roots, cut lengthwise,
reveal air cavities separated by cross sections. Throughout U.S.
in swamps, marshes, along ditches. Do not eat anything with leaves
or blossoms resembling the poison or water hemlock without positive
identification.
DEADLY
POISONOUS: All parts poisonous, especially the root.
Nausea, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, and tremors, followed
by extremely violent seizures, respiratory failure, pupils dilated,
high temperature, cardiac arrest and death.
