(Calvatia gigantea)
giant puffball, snuff box
Description:
Large fungi, globular shape. Color, white, creamy white, beige
or tan. Spores, olive, olive brown, yellow, ochre, brown to purplish-brown.
A puffball, at first, is firm and fleshy covered by tough skin
with little or no stem, gradually turning into a deeper yellow,
a greenish-brown slim, then becomes dry and powdery, like snuff.
Throughout U.S. on soil surface, decayed wood, in lawns, meadows,
old pastures.
Edible:
Puffballs, edible only while flesh is snow-white, bitter with
even faint tinge of yellow. Before using, cut open to be sure
it does not contain outline of a cap and stem, which could be
a poisonous fungi at the button stage. Quickly wash, if needed,
pat dry or wipe off with cloth, add to recipe.
