WILD ONION
(Allium species)
wild garlic, nodding onion

Description: All species grow from round or oblong bulbs, with familiar onion odor. Leaves may be tubular or flat, appear early spring, usually withering before the white to dark purple flowers show, which form a terminal cluster on a naked stem 6-24 inches tall. Found in moist to dry soil in valleys and hillsides up to 9,000 ft.

Edible: The whole plant, either raw or cooked. Eat sparingly until you find they agree with you. Finely chopped leaves are good in salads and stews. Bulb stores well for later use. Reported to repel insects when leaves are rubbed on skin. Death Camas (Zygadenus spp.), a poisonous plant is similar in appearance, but lacks the onion odor, has a dark outer layer around the bulb and the greenish or yellowish-white flowers are in a branched cluster.
