(Nicotiana rustica)
Description:
There are many species of this genus. A strongly, odorous, annual
herb, 12- 24 in.tall. Leaves, entire. Leaf blades, at base, are
lance-ovate to elliptic becoming smaller toward the shoot tip.
Whole plant is glandular-hairy. Flowers, a dirty white with a
narrow tube abruptly spreading outward near the top. Fruit is
a capsule. An agricultural product or garden plant, found wild
in many areas.
POISON:
Effects in all species, largely nervous, consisting of shivering,
shaking, twitching muscles, raped heartbeat, staggering, weakness,
staring, blindness and death. The alkaloid nicotine is a virulent
poison, producing disturbance in the digestive and circulatory
organs. The smoke acts on the brain, causing nausea, vomiting
and drowsiness.
