WINTERGREEN
(Gaulthera procumbens)
checkerberry, deerberry, wax cluster
Description:
Shrub, with creeping stems sending up erect branches, 6 in.tall.
Bears alternate, oval leathery leaves with serrate margins. Both,
leaves and solitary, nodding
white flowers grow near tops of branches. Fruit is a scarlet,
berry-like capsule. Eastern
U.S. in woods, clearings.
Edible,
Medicinal, Toxic: Oil from leaves and fruit are used to flavor
candy, toothpaste, gum, berries made into jam. Medicinal value
in the oil, obtained by steam distillation. Used for headache,
muscle aches, rheumatism, foot balms and other pains. Also used
in urinary ailments, colic and flatulence. Used externally as
a douche, a poultice for skin diseases and inflamed areas. Oil
can cause irritation and must be used cautiously and taken internally
under close medical supervision.
