Description:
A perennial, 2-3 feet high, with a stiff, upright whitish
stem, branching near the top. The leaves are oval, spiny,
sharp-pointed with their bases half-clasping the stem.
The fruits are somewhat 4-sided, white, shining, resembling
little shells. It is not related to Saffron, although
the flowers are used similarly. It is cultivated extensively
throughout the world, sometimes escaping.
