CRAB APPLE

American crab apple, wild sweet crab

Description: Twiggy, stiff branched tree 20-30 ft. tall with thorn-like spurs and growths, which soon become glabrous. Leaves, ovate to oval, 2-4 in. long. Similar to domestic apple but ovate to oval leaves are sharply toothed. Flowers, bright rose as they open, then nearly white. Fruit, smaller than cultivated apples, yellow-green when ripe. Found in old fields, thickets blooming from March to May and ripening from September to November in eastern to central U.S.

EDIBLE: The fruit is too tart and hard to be enjoyed raw. Crabapples contain an abundance of pectin and make excellent jellies or preserves.
