GUMWEED
(Grindelia squarrosa)
resin weed, sticky heads
Description:
Biennial or short-lived perennial, 1-3 ft. tall. Leaves, somewhat
clasping with margins, nearly entire to serrate. Flower, yellow
with gummy bracts, tips recurved. Prairie
states, spreading eastward along roadsides.
MEDICINAL:
Dried bud and bloom, in tincture, for colds, nasal congestion,
asthma (except where a weak heart is involved), bronchitis, whopping
cough. Externally tea can be used as a wash for burns, rashes,
blisters. Fluid extract, for indolent ulcers, impetigo, cold sores,
skin irritations caused by poison ivy, oak rhus. Use in small
doses and well diluted. Large doses can be poisonous, smaller
doses may cause slowing of the heartbeat.
