NIGHTSHADE
(Solanum dulcamara)
bittersweet, climbing nightshade.
Description:
shrub-like perennial, from woody base, slender tailing branches.
Leaves, alternate, ovate, opposite lobes at base. Star-shaped
flowers, bluish purple or white with bright yellow stamens are
clustered, hanging from leaf axil. Berries are oval, green when
unripe, maturing to bright red. Blossoms and berries, found on
same plant through summer into late autumn. North America in moist
rich soil, forests, thickets and waste places.
DEADLY
POISONOUS: Whole plant contains the toxic solanine, with the
concentration in the unripe berry. Nervousness, abdominal pain,
vomiting, diarrhea, shock circulatory and respiratory depression,
low temperature, pupil dilation, paralysis, loss of
sensation and death.
