Description: A small tree or shrub, 9-30 ft. Large alternate leaves, smooth, oblong to lance shape, dark green above, lighter beneath and attached to twigs by short petioles. Small flowers appear in axils of the last year's leaves, 6 petals in two sets, first green, then reddish purple. Fruits, greenish yellow, resembling stubby bananas. Eastern, Central U.S. in rich soils along streams, forming thickets, prefers shade.

EDIBLE: The sweet, bright yellow, creamy-textured pulp is good raw or cooked. It can be gathered while still green and set aside for a few days to ripen, to dark brown. surrounds a large brown seed. It is a taste most have to learn to acquire to enjoy. Powdered seeds applied to the heads of children to control lice. Seed, leaves and bark potentially toxic.
