Description:
Prickly shrubs, sometimes climbing, trailing or erect. Leaves,
alternate, odd-pinnate, deciduous or persistent, often aromatic-glandular.
Fruit, a fleshy hip containing the hairy achenes as if they were
seeds. Many wild and cultivated species are found in temperate
regions throughout the world, mainly Northern Hemisphere.
EDIBLE,
MEDICINAL: Flower petals, to flavor butter, confectionaries,
making sweet oils, pot-pourri. High in vitamins, especially Vit.C.
Hips, gathered after first snowfall or late fall. Used to make
jellies, preserves, syrups, wines. Tea of leaves and petals help
in skin and eye complaints, earaches, sore throat, a mouthwash,
eases uterine cramps, heart and nerve tonic.
