(Amelanchier alnifolia)
Northwestern juneberry
Description:
Common shrub, 8 ft. tall. Leaves vary from elliptical to nearly
round, blunt at apex, rounded at base and toothed above the middle.
Flowers, white in short racemes. Berries, sweet, edible. They
are pink at first, blue-black when ripe, resembling tiny apples.
Northwest, in dry soil in open woods and brushy areas, from sea
level to 7500 ft., very adaptable.
EDIBLE:
Fruit dries on vine, still edible into late summer, through the
winter. Berries, generally sweet and pulpy, eaten raw, cooked,
or mashed and dried for storage, made into preserves, pies and
wine.
