Description: Low growing shrubs, trees. Bark is scaly, reddish-brown. Branchlets, irregularly alternate on main branches. Leaves or needles, 2-ranked, yellowish beneath and without resin ducts and leaf bases appearing to extend down the branchlet. Male and female flowers on different plants. Male tree has tiny cones. Only the female flowers produce a red, fleshy berry. Northwest U.S., widely planted as an ornamental.

POISONOUS: All plant parts, except fleshy berry, surrounding the seed, contain the toxic alkaloid, Taxine. Ingesting these parts is extremely dangerous, whether fresh or dried. The seeds are deadly if chewed. Consuming large amounts of the foliage and bark can be fatal. Death is usually sudden and without warning depending on the degree of poisoning. Swallowing smaller amounts produces the usual toxic symptoms.
